Cy Ranch girls place third; 7 CFISD wrestlers medal at state tournament

Feb. 22, 2023—The Cypress Ranch High School girls’ wrestling team placed third overall in Class 6A, while seven total CFISD participants to earn top-six medals at the UIL State Wrestling Championships, held Feb. 17-18 at the Berry Center.

The top-3 finish is CFISD’s top team performance since Cypress Ranch won the girls’ championship in 2018. Over the last six years, the Mustangs have four top-15 finishes.

Cypress Ranch scored 61 points to place third overall. Of the Mustangs’ seven state participants, six won at least won match and four reached the podium in their respective bracket.

Cypress Creek High School earned 26 points to finish tied for 22nd, while Cypress Ridge (24 points) tied for 27th.

Cypress Ranch High School senior Raylan Ross pins Prosper Rock Hill’s Haby Adeogun in the Class 6A 165-pound third-place match. Ross was the top individual CFISD finisher at the UIL State Wrestling Championships and helped lead Cypress Ranch to a third-place finish in the girls’ standings.

The following girls’ wrestlers placed among the top six in the state:

  • Scarlet Sanchez, Cypress Ridge – fourth place, 107 pounds;
  • Mariah Smith, Cypress Ranch – sixth place, 126 pounds;
  • Mariana Bozo, Cypress Ranch – fifth place, 132 pounds;
  • Sara Garza, Cypress Ranch – sixth place, 145 pounds;
  • Raylan Ross, Cypress Ranch – third place, 165 pounds; and
  • Emma Thomas, Cypress Creek – fourth place, 185 pounds.

In the boys’ tournament, Cy-Fair scored 17 points to tie for 27th. Langham Creek (10 points) and Cypress Ranch (8) placed among the top 40 teams.

Cy-Fair High School senior Ethan Anderson was the lone CFISD boys’ wrestler to finish among the top six in the state in his respective bracket. Anderson placed fourth in 215 pounds.
